Baseball: Ralph Houk’s baseball career was interrupted by World War II. He served four years in the Army’s 9th Armored Division in Europe. He rose from the rank of private to major (hence his nickname “The Major”), saw action at Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
