Background: Based in Italy, Norman’s B-24 outfit did a great deal of effective work on oil installations and other vital targets in Germany, France, Austria and other spots under the domination of the Axis. Serving as radio operator, he saw a great deal of action and received the Presidential citation with cluster, the Good Conduct Medal with two battle stars for southern France and Rome-Arno; the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. He also wears the Purple Heart decoration for injuries received when he was forced to jump from his plane after it had caught fire just as it was leaving the ground in France.
