Background: John Orser was engaged in the taking Okinawa in 1945 near the end of World War II. At the front, while under fire, he retrieved a wounded, disabled buddy from the open field of battle to the protective cover of a foxhole, while he himself was wounded and disabled. For his actions, he received the Purple Heart.
