Background: Ouellete was killed in Vietnam action on March 6, 1967. He was the second Navy man to receive the nation’s highest honor in Vietnam. Ouelete, a machine gunner on a river patrol boat in the Mekong Delta, saw an enemy grenade fall at the opposite end of the boat. He dashed, warning shipmates to take cover and threw himself between the captain and the grenade talking the full blast.
